Research In Motion (RIM) has decided to release its BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone in Singapore later this month. As a reminder, the smartphone has a microSD/SDHC slot, 2MP shooter with 5x digital zoom and video capture capability, and Wi-Fi support. Its camera also allows users to capture video in two resolutions 240×180 or 176×144 for sharing via MMS.

The Asus P527 smartphone has finally reached the US and will be released sometime early this year. However, it wont have 3G but instead will have Quadband EDGE along with other features like: built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and Google Earth GPS.No word on pricing yet, hopefully it wont be too much.

But if you’re in the market for a small, high-performance laptop, is it the best option? I pored over specs for four similarly positioned and more-or-less similarly priced laptops to see if you’ll get your $1,800 worth out of the Air. Let’s go to the chart, shall we?

It turns out that, surprise surprise, you pay a premium for a tiny form factor. The MacBook Air is seriously expensive for the guts you get inside, but Apple isn’t the only company guilty of charging insane amounts for smaller computers. Just look at the Sony Vaio TZ150N, for example. $2,100 for a 1.06 GHz processor? Are you kidding me? I don’t care how small, it’s still a rip-off.

Verdict

With the N95 8GB, Nokia has added significant improvements to an already feature-loaded multimedia mobile. The enhancements aren’t solely cosmetic – it’s not just an iPhone-challenging memory upgrade either. Nokia has refined the screen design to make it more media-friendly, enhanced the GPS system, and worked in a number of software upgrades. Battery performance has been extended. It’s still quite a large handset, which may put off some buyers. But the real heavyweight you get is the package of useful and entertaining features in what is a sophisticated smartphone.

As an N series handset based on the Symbian S60 operating system, the N95 8GB has a suitably hefty rundown of additional applications loaded up, and more can be added to the phone. Your most-used multimedia content, maps and web links can be quickly accessed by pressing the multimedia key, next to the central five-way navigator pad. It brings up a carousel of easily-selectable content.
